One Bite

Over 20+ years, catching thousands of big drum, I have never had one taken off the line, but it does occassionally happen.

After the storm

This was during.  They are still biting pretty good, between 6 guides fishing today, we scared the hell out of triple digits.
Should be good for the corkers tomorrow.

What do guides do after fishing all day in the rain?

Fish off the porch.

Double digits and lower units

Greg and I both got "double digits" today, Ray momicked the pups and Justin got a new lower unit.
I guarantee, as much as the drum bite on a nor'easter that Justin's skeg will have the paint rubbed off of it by Monday afternoon.

"Blow baby blow"

----Capt. Justin Haddock, 12:51 pm Aug. 24, 2017

It's like i had a crystal ball

Justin scared the heck out of double digits today on the big drum, plus 5 man limit of pups, Jennings was well into double digits with the slot reds and had his keepers, same with Ray, plus a few big drum, including one on a cork this morning, I had enough pups for dinner and 7 big drum.  All of us back before sunset.
Few pics to follow.

All the difference a little wind makes

A lot of customers don't understand the dynamics of the Neuse.   We have no signficant lunar tides.  Our tides are primarily wind tides.  If the wind doesn't blow at least a little, then the water doesn't move.  If the water doesn't move, the fish don't move.  If you land on them, great.  If you are throwing corks for the big drum, even better, but if you are a bait fisherman, you need the wind to move that water and the scent of your bait so the fish will find you.
Several days this week we have had no wind.  I mean nada.  When I jumped off that tarpon the other day, I cleaned my cutting board and watched the scales drift straight down to the bottom.   Glad that I landed on enough of those unicorns to get a bite.   Greg did good landing on the trout the same day, but had a tough day before.  Jennings did good landing on the puppy drum, but in general, our mixed bag fishing the last several days has been tougher than we like.   All that changed yesterday with that southwest breeze ahead of the front,
Greg, Jennings and Ray all had similar afternoons, easilly catching their limit of pups in one spot and releasing double digits on their next stops.

Greg stayed out a little later and caught a few of these before running in from the storm.
This weekend we are going to get all the wind we want and the big center consoles are going to be crushing the big drum with all the pups we can stand.   This nor'easter is just what we needed to cool off the water and send the next big plug of big drum up the river.

Half day trips

3/4 day is 6 hours, you can come in early if you like, but for a nearshore trip, no half days.

Half days are for children and old ladies with short attention spans.

Was I being too direct in my thoughts in reponding to a customer?   I'm not good enough to catch enough fish in a half day anyway......

trout and unicorns

I was chasing unicorns.....and saw a lot of them today.
Meanwhile Greg was catching some nice trout.

Report from the seamounts

No flies this time, James just got back from the seamounts.   In 3 days of fishing, they raised 63 blue marlin, 2 striped marlin and 1 sailfish, getting 42 bites and catching better than half of those, plus the 2 stripeys and a sailfish.

Hero or zero

Tried to be the hero yesterday and find the big bite, I blanked out.
Today was looking pretty bleak but managed to bang out 3 citation drum this afternoon.
The guys with the corks got theirs this morning.

"Thanks for checking in. George. We had an absolutely fantastic time. Day two was definitely a little slower than day one, but Jennings worked his tail off trying to put us on the fish.

In total, we caught about 50 fish including a mixed bag of about 18 diff species. And of course we landed that big 47 inch red. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back.

Thanks again to you and Anna for coordinating everything. Here are a few pics for your photo gallery."

Four Mullet Challenge

Two mullet later and 30 minutes to spare.
