On the way to the awards banquet......

.....to congratulate the winners.   What an amazing day.  We got off to a great start, catching a dozen before noon,  but then the bite died, Capt. James finally got on them again, but we were one fish short of the daily, losing on time with 4 other boats, all with 24 sailfish.

For the tourney, that black marlin worth 500 points, or cleaning up any 6 of our 20+ sancochoes would have been all the difference.

I'm very proud of James, Berto and Joseph for the work they put into this tournament and giving us the opportunities.   I'm so sorry for them that we didn't capitalize on those opportunities.

Aggitator, Pelese and Spanish Fly or Sea Angel, it's too close to call 3rd place and nothing is official.

Missed opportunities

We had a bunch of 'em today......about 8 sails from the lead, which is not a lot when the opportunity is there to catch 40 or more/day.

Tomorrow is the final day, we'll see what happens......

Day 1 Los Suenos Triple Crown Tournament Report

After trading the lead for many hours of the day yesterday a 2 o'clock lull and lack of bites pushed us back into about 10th place.   With over 30 sailfish releases, we are in the hunt, along with 20 other boats, all within a couple bites of the lead.

We did have the opportunity to break off a BIG black marlin with 20 minutes left.   Even if we had stayed connected and settled into the fight, it may not have mattered, that joker was so big we could still be doing battle.

Great fishing and looking forward to Day 2.

Tourney Prep and Snook

Things have been so busy down here I have not had a chance to go fishing, not even for a snook, but that recently changed.

The reports have been good, yesterday the Dragin Fly had a double digit day and 4 tunas, despite the full moon and El Nino, we're having some pretty good fishing, I just haven't had a chance to get out on the boat since the last tournament.  On average, we've been seeing between 10 and 30 sails a day, some days they bite better than others, but all and all, fishing has been good.

I played in the surf a couple of times for a couple of hours and I have yet to get a bite until yesterday afternoon, I got my snook.

Practicing the next couple of days and we need it, tourney starts Thursday, wish us luck.

Report from up there and down here.

Bending Fly Rods, Huge Crappie and the first showing of Raccoon Perch.  This cold snap is going to last a few days and it's going to stack the fish up again, they'll bunch up in this cool water.  As far as the water being high,  it keeps the crowds at home thinking the fish aren't biting.....  By the way this high water also brings the Shad!  Pics coming soon.  ----Capt. Mitchell Blake

Down in Costa Rica it's like Groundhog Day, which ain't bad as long as it involves double digit shots at sailfish and often double digit days.....catching less sailfish on those days that you are not battling 50-100 pound tunas  -----Capt. James Smith www.draginflycostarica.com

Fisherman's Post School and Pics

Be sure to check out the Fisherman's Post Fishing School in Morehead City Feb. 20, although I am "stuck" here in Costa Rica we will have some of the Down East Guides at the school.

We are having a super busy year and I haven't been able to get out on the water much, but this is some of what I've been doing.

Still time to get down here, drop us a line.

Recognize this guy?

Yup, that's Cato from the Free Agent to the Dragin Fly

Good fishing continues, most days are yielding double digit days with the sails.  Still plenty of tunas around and some marlin and dolphin have showed up.
