Blue marlin on the fly, they added 6 more to the talley, all caught over the past 3 days on 20 pound IGFA fly tackle.

....and up the Roanoke on a 4 wt, it's back to basics and where it all began......with bluegills, pumpkinseeds, goggleeyes and bream and lots of them.

Double limit of pups, a yearling and one old drum in one sitting.

Looks like there is an amazing crop of pups this year, they seem to be everywhere, that would be the one year olds that are anywhere from 10-16 inches right now.  Good reports of nice flounder and slot sized pups as well.   Good trout bite in the lower river.  Heard that there was a fish kill up the river,  that is pretty normal for this time of the year, hopefully it was mostly menhaden and few sores.

Good flounder, puppy drum and trout fishing in the lower Neuse, every day a different highlight, but good stuff, few tarpon and big drum around also.  

Dragin Fly just got back to Los Suenos and I haven't gotten the full report, but each angler caught several blue marlin and several sails on the fly.  I do have the pics

Day fishing out of Los Suenos has been pretty good.   We've got a super nice family today and yesterday.   Yesterday they got the tunas and 6 sails, also an odd catch, a thresher shark!

 

Today they are trying for a rooster and maybe some bottom fishing on the Dragin Fly.   Report on today to follow.   Tomorrow we are heading back out for 4 nights and 3 days of fly fishing for blue marlin.  The numbers may be a little more impressive on this trip because our anglers are less concerned about IGFA rules and more interested in staying connected, using heavier tippet and longer leaders.   It's kind of like dragging fly.

Dragin Fly Overnight Report

The boys just got in.  Mr. Hugh Chatham  has 5 of the 9 billfish species on the fly, lacking Atlantic and Pacific blue marlin, a sword, a spearfish.  On day 1 he checked off his Pacific blue marlin.  Actually he caught 2 on day 1.   He was under the tutorial of Capt. Jake Jordan who took a few shots and landed his 50th blue marlin on the fly for his lifetime.   He also caught a sail on the fly but lost his shot at a grand slam backing off the drag a little late on what he thought was a sail and turned out to be a striped marlin, breaking him off.   After 3 days of fishing, 25 blue marlin raised, 2 striped marlin raised and a sailfish, getting 12 bites on the fly, landing 7 blue marlin and the sailfish,all on 20# IGFA fly tackle.    Jake's complete report will be posted later today at http://blog.draginflycostarica.com/

Guess What I caught yesterday?

Was in the local tackle shop shooting the breeze and there were a couple of locals talking about going down to the beach and wetting a line.  It didn't take much of a push and I told them that I would meet them there.    Shawn, from Texas, joined us and there wasn't much to it until the tide got a little lower.   Shawn caught his on a big poppper, nice fish.   I caught mine on a live mullet.  Missed the first one, but got the next bite.   After the release I put on my last mullet and about 5 minutes later I was connected again.   this one about a kilo bigger than the last.   What did I catch?

Fish number 2 for the day

No, this is not the way I would recommend handling a tarpon, nor would I recommend bringing one this far in the boat.   Not really good for the fish or for whoever is holding the fish if things go bad........but Greg is a big boy and a big man, got to be careful how you handle fish like that and men like Greg :)

six more blue marlin on the fly

Capt. Jake Jordan just got back from another trip to the seamounts.   After 3 days of fishing he and his guests raised 32 blue marlin and 3 sailfish.   All 20# tippet, they were 100% on the sailfish, catching all 3 of them and amazingly they caught 6 blue marlin on the fly.  This is not an easy thing to do unless you have the right equipment and the right coach.   Capt.
